Aberdeen, Scotland, is known as “The Granite City” or “The Silver City”. Rubislaw Quarry was famous for its granite, which sparkles like silver especially after rainfall and widely used in local buildings. There are charming Victorian and Edwardian architectures on Union Street, including the Town House. Many styles of designs can be seen at Provost Skene’s House. Other famous buildings are King’s College, founded in 1495 and St. Andrew’s Cathedral, which is the mother-church of Episcopal Communion in the United States. Scotland’s long history and culture, often turbulent with invasions and attempts for independence, are eminent in the city. Aberdeen, situated between River Dee and River Don, with beautiful long sandy coastline to the North Sea, was an important fishing port and once a bustling port carrying cargoes of tea to India.
Today Aberdeen is the center of Europe’s petroleum industry, serving offshore oilrigs in the North Sea. If you are visiting Scotland’s Northeast region, Aberdeen is your gateway. This region has lot to offer. Highlands and moors, forests and river valleys, rugged cliffs and dry climate all contribute to the charm of this region. It is home of the Cairngorms National Park, the second national park in the country, and Queen Victoria had a residence in Royal Deeside. Be sure to visit Balmoral Castle, as well as many others on the Castle Trail. Also try the Whiskey Trail for “water of life” in Scotland.
