Berlin lies along the River Spree in northeastern Germany. Schloss Bellevue is the residence of German president. It also has a beautiful park. Unter den Linden is a tree-lined boulevard stretching from the Brandenburg Gate to the former royal palace, Stadtschloss. It crosses the River Spree and on it are renowned buildings such as the Berlin State Opera, Berlin State Library, and German Historial Museum. Gendarmenmarkt is a square with Konzerthaus (Concert Hall), French and German Cathedrals.
Berlin has a long history of immigration and attracted liberals. French Calvinists were allowed in for 10 years tax-free and in 1920’s underground subcultures developed especially in Berlin. Today Berlin is the host of the Berlin International Film Festival and many liberal and political parades.
