Brussels is centrally located and is the capital of Belgium. It was mentioned in the 6th century but officially established in 979. It was governed by the Holy Roman Empire, Unified Spain, Austrian Empire and others until independence in 1831. Many left remarkable marks in history, such as the Dukes of Brabant with the enormous palace in Royal Park. Most visited site is the Grand’Place (Grote Markt) with Guilt Houses, Town Hall, and the King’s House. It was a humble trade market for English wool, French wine and German beer before patrician families built stone mansions and became commercial and administrative.
Today you will enjoy the museum and a personalized glass of Belgium Gueuze (fruit beer) or Trappist on the terraces. Also visit the Palace of the Nation, the Sablon Square (great antique & art shopping), the Palace of Justice, the Royal Palace, the Cinquantenaire Park (the Triumphal Arch, the Exposition Halls, and the Bordiare Halls), the Royal Residence, the St. Hubert Gallery, and the Royal Square. The most famous statue is the Manneken Pis with 600 costumes.
There are many architecturally beautiful religious buildings also, such as the Saint Michael and Saint Gudula Cathedral, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Sablon Church, the Saint Nicholas Church, and the Notre Dame Church of Laken (Rodin’s “Thinker” is stored here). Brussels boasts more than 100 museums and other attractions include the Music & Light Show at the Grote Markt, Bruparck, Toone Theater, the Belgian Comic Strip Center, the Ommegang and the Flower Carpet among others.
“City of Beer” is also famous for chocolate (try a choux pastry with a cream & vanilla custard filling and dark chocolate icing from Wittamer and visit Neuhaus among luxurious shops at the St. Hubert Gallery). Other musts are “fritures with mayonnaise” from more than 4000 frietkots in the city or at Antoine’s and “Mussels in Brussels”, a national dish – Chez Leon is recommended. Take a cooking class or gastronomic tours to cook fresh endives or find out the difference between a Brussels waffle and a Liege waffle.
