Helsinki, capital of Finland and its largest city, was founded by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden in 1550 at the mouth of the Vantaa River. The city meanders around a number of islands, bays and peninsulas and due to its coastal position, there are many seafaring activities to delight tourists. Sightseeing ferries run in the summer from Helsinki’s port to various islands or you can hop on a cruise-ferry to Stockholm, Sweden or take a hydrofoil or catamaran to Estonia or Tallinn. You might visit the Helsinki zoo located on Korkeasaari Island or Suomenlinna, a naval fortress island which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Helsinkians like to celebrate with festivals. There are music festivals in August, the spring festival in April and the annual “Herring Market” in September, to name but a few. The symbol of Helsinki is the Helsinki Cathedral, the most prominent building in the city. Helsinki’s city center is also known for its neoclassical style of architecture with buildings built in the 19th century to resemble St. Petersburg. In the winter, you can ice swim, cross-country ski or stroll down the famous Aleksanterinkatu's Christmas street (Joulukatu), known for its delightfully elaborate Christmas lights.
There are a variety of museums, galleries, theaters and music venues to visit in the city center as well. For other recreational activities, the residents like to frequent the Helsinki Central Park, a narrow ten kilometer strip of park that runs from the inner city to the city’s northern border. Helsinki is also home to the Linnanmäki amusement park, which has many rides, including five roller coasters and the world's first Intamin ZacSpin rollercoaster.
