Rome is the capital city of Italy and Lazio, situated in the central west region of the province of Lazio with the Tiber River flowing through its center. With almost 3 million inhabitants, it is Italy’s largest and most populated city. It is also an ancient city, founded more than 2700 years ago. Legend has it that it was founded by the Etruscan twins Romulus and Remus, but archaeologists have found evidence that it grew from pastoral settlements on the Palatine Hill in Rome. Today the ancient and the modern easily coexist in this busy city. Rome is one of the most popular cities in the world drawing people to its spiritual and historical attractions.

As the spiritual center of the Catholic religion, the Vatican attracts the faithful from all over the globe. The Vatican city, home to the Pope, is also a city within a city and is the world's smallest independent sovereign state. Besides the Pope, The Sistine Chapel, with its painted ceiling by Michelangelo is the most famous tourist attraction in the Vatican City. St. Peter’s Basilica built over 1500 years ago is another splendid site as are the lovely Vatican gardens, first landscaped over 1000 years ago and still meticulously maintained.

One of the greatest symbols of Rome is the Colosseum built in the 1st century AD. The Colosseum was the Roman empire’s largest amphitheatre and allowed seating for up to 50,000 people. Spectator sports in the amphitheatre included gladiators and animals battling to the death. Other important monuments in Rome include, the Roman Forum, the Domus Aurea, the Pantheon, Arch of Constantine, Trajan's Column, Trajan's Market, Bocca della Verità, Catacombs of Rome, Circus Maximus, Baths of Caracalla, and Pyramid of Cestius.

There are a significant number of musems and galleries in Rome, among them are the Borghese Gallery, the Villa Giulia National Etruscan Museum, the National Museum of Rome, the Museum of Roman Civilization, the Capitoline Museums, the Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo, and the National Gallery of Modern Art. Tourists can easily sightsee by foot in Rome as there is a tour bus that allows you to get on and off at any of the historical sights. Tickets may be purchased for a small fee at specific kiosks around the city. For accomodations, you can find anything from luxury to budget in Rome, however, it is advisable to book well in advance as there is no real slow season.

Today, as in ancient times, Rome’s inhabitants still enjoy shopping in the outdoor markets, dining in many outdoor cafes and strolling through beautiful squares marked with grand fountains.
